Professor William K.S. "Thunderbolt" Chow trained under James Mitose in the art of Kenpo Jiujutsu, and attained the rank of black belt. In 1944 Professor Chow began to teach what he called Kenpo Karate, showing his departure from Mitose. The Professor wanted to maintain focus on the 'martial' or 'war' aspect of the art while relaxing the focus on the traditional form of the art. In fact, his original system contained no forms or katas at all.
The art of Kenpo Karate has been passed down from master to master, evolving along the way as each master excelled in their desire to keep the art true to its founders wishes, to remain focused on the application of the 'martial' aspect of the art.
Many styles of Kenpo have branched out from this original. Some adjusting the techniques within the system while others have added other influencial arts using the original kenpo foundations and principals as a base system.
